Ah! Another really cool thing about North Carolina; Did you know that our state was the home to 21 brewpubs and 28 breweries? And that the Triangle area has one of the largest concentrations of breweries in the state. How lucky can we be!!

News about Sierra Nevada selecting our great state, out of more than 200 sites to build a new facility, is yet another example of all the good things happening in North Carolina.

Though many of us are done with our college days, it can be fun to reminisce about the exciting and outgoing stages that we experienced during college. Of all the creative and engaging things the Triangle has to offer-this tops my list of totally cool things! A team of students, staff and faculty at NC State University mounted a camera over a bald eagles nest in the Jordan Lake area and are streaming live activity in the nest where two eagle chicks have recently hatched. Durham foodies are in for another real sweat deal as Daisy Cakes joins my all-time favorites Fosters and Guglhupf in their new store front at 401 Foster Street. Owners Tanya and Konrad Katolos, both well known in the culinary community, create tarts, puddings, and all things great and sweat for those addicted to wonderful food.

Downtown Durham is fast becoming one of the most talked about historic restoration projects in the country. The vibrant work/live urban center is anchored by The American Tobacco campus which has brought together all sorts of start-up companies and other firms that specialize in helping them, including the Council for Entrepreneurial Development.

The energy of the area, with the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, Durham Performing Arts Center, and Brightleaf Square in close proximity, creates an atmosphere of excitement and innovation.

Treyburn neighbor and friend Branford Marsalis made news again this week when nominations were announced Wednesday for the upcoming Grammy awards. Marsalis music scored in the category of best large jazz ensemble album for “alma Adentro:The Puerto Rican Songbook.”

In recgnition of Branford’s great talent he was also recently awarded North Carolina’s highest civilian award in the fine arts category.

Branford and his quartet, which includes another Treyburn neighbor Joey Calderazzo, will be performing January 13 and 14th at the Reynolds Theater at Duke University.

Thanks Branford and Joey for making Treyburn and Durham a great place to live!

Raleigh Welcomes Pullen Park Back Again

Whether you're visiting Raleigh or if you're already a resident the newly renovated Pullen Park is a must see!

For nearly two years, Raleigh residents have been anxiously awaiting the reopening of one of the city’s most impressive landmarks – Pullen Park. Donated to the city by philanthropist Richard Stanhope Pullen in 1887, the park has seen generations come and go through it’s sidewalks. Residents who have lived in the area for a long time remember spending days there as children, and now welcome the opportunity to bring their children and grandchildren to the park as well.

After Pullen Park’s amusement area underwent $6 million in renovations, the park was reopened and quickly filled with excited families. Among the renovations, residents will now find an expanded playground area, a welcome center, a revived 1911 Dentzel carousel, and the Pullen Place Café & Catering, which offers local food and healthy eating options.

The renovations and dedication made to Pullen Park were certainly worth the wait, and as Diane Sauer, director of the Raleigh Parks and Department said, “After 24 months of extensive renovations, we’re here to celebrate.”

North Carolina Takes Favor Among Retirees

North Carolina has become the destination spot for many retirees

When you think of retirement, where do you see yourself? Some people dream of moving to an island in the tropics or a relaxing lake house, but as new census data shows us, many people are now more drawn to the picturesque landscape of North Carolina. It used to be that the Sun Belt states drew in most of the retiring generations but as of lately, North Carolina has taken the favor of retirees.

According to U.S. Census data, about 9,000 retirees have relocated to North Carolina, more than any other state in the country. Factors leading to the shift could be that less people are moving for retirement or that less people are retiring in general. Either way, the trend has drawn new businesses such as Futurity First Insurance Group to the North Carolina region and will likely continue to draw more.
